Responsibilities
Serves as Curator of Ca’ d’Zan. Responsible for the preservation and overall upkeep of the historic mansion and Decorative Arts Collection.

Oversees and participates in research, registration, inventory, conservation and/or restoration, and design layout and placement of objects associated with/of the Ca’ d’Zan and Decorative Arts Collection of The Ringling. Responsible for the decorative arts collection of The Ringling and supervises the movement and tracking of all objects connected to the decorative arts with the Registrar's Department, which includes yearly inventory. Creates plans for the layout and installation of the objects based on analysis of research and historic images. Researches and creates registration files for the Ca’ d’Zan and Decorative Arts Collection. Works with preservation architects and professionals to meet the guidelines for historic preservation.

Researches and organizes vendors who restore and repair all aspects of the historic mansion's interior and exterior. This includes the annual restoration of windows and touch pointing of the terracotta, repainting of interior walls and care of floors and carpets. Assists museum Conservation with the cleaning of objects or elements from objects from the Ca’ d’Zan Collection. For example, cleaning and waxing of furniture, cleaning of Ormolu, waxing and washing of walls, identification of craftspeople and sources of supplies needed to work on the restoration of objects.

Participates in docent training on Ca’ d’Zan collection items, Dwight James Baum - Architect of the Ca’ d’Zan, and the history of John & Mable Ringling. Gives private tours and presentations for public outreach. This includes research on all relevant programs. Writes publications & information on Ca’ d’Zan. May work with Public Relations Manager on scheduling of public appearances. Organizes the FSU Summer Class in interior design, finding workshops and vendors used as teaching tools. Build and sustain relationships with curators, academics, and other art professionals. Interfaces with colleagues at the national/international level. Serves as a subject matter expert for Ca’ d’Zan and the history of John & Mable Ringling.

Supports the Curatorial and Collections teams and special projects as needed.

May supervise volunteers & interns as needed.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree from an accredited institution or the highest degree in Historic Preservation, Decorative Arts, or closely related field.
  • At least 3 years' experience in preserving or maintaining historic buildings, a related conservation field, or relevant curatorial experience.
  • Experience in the maintenance and management concerns that are particular to historic houses.
  • Knowledgeable in American material culture history, the principles of historic preservation, and contemporary museum practices.
  • Knowledge of collections management and the responsibilities of compliance with the American Associate of Museum’s policies and procedures.

Preferred

  • 5 years’ experience managing historic house museums.
  • Conservation and historic building experience.
  • Ability to conduct scholarly research in the decorative arts.
  • Prior public speaking experience.

Pay Plan
This is a full-time/12 month, non-tenured Faculty position. Anticipated hiring at the Assistant or Associate Curator level.

Soft Money Funded Position
This is a soft money funded position, with renewal based on available funds and the needs of the University.

Criminal Background Check
This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check, to include fingerprinting. The background check will be conducted as authorized and in accordance with University Policy 4-OP-C-7-B11.
