Curatorial Assistant

Lightner Museum, St. Augustine

Curatorial Assistant Job Description

At first glance the position of Curatorial Assistant may sound “flashy” but the reality is far from it.  A Curatorial Assistant’s primary function will be to assist the Museum Curator in tedious cleaning tasks and heavy physical lifting (up to 50 pounds) of museum pieces, furniture and exhibition structures.  This person may also be asked to assist the Museum Store Manager in heavy lifting associated with the Museum Store.

The Curatorial Assistant must have a proper understanding and respect for history, historical preservation, fine art & antiquities.  This person must be able to handle items with the finest of care but must also be able to lift and haul very large and heavy items of up to 50 pounds.

The Curatorial Assistant must be reliable to work shifts determined by the museum, which may include evening hours, holidays, and weekends.  The Curatorial Assistant must be adaptable to change in terms of roles, location and responsibilities as the museum works to grow with added visitors, exhibitions and events.

Dress code for this position takes some finesse.  The Museum Curatorial Assistant should look professional at all times while still managing physical tasks and the probability of getting dirty.

“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.”  - Oscar Wilde
