The Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum (BPPCM) is seeking to hire a Museum Director. The Museum is located in Overtown, an historic African-American neighborhood located in the City of Miami, Florida.
The Museum's mission is to identify, acquire, preserve, and promote collections of an historical nature that will be of educational and cultural value to preservation of African-American history as it relates to the struggles and achievements of Black police officers and judges in Overtown, as they served their community during the 1950s and 1960s.
The Museum is a full-service facility. It displays police memorabilia, artifacts, documents, video, and oral histories by the men and women who worked there. It houses a courtroom, community center, tutorial center, and a learning center for children in the City of Miami's most under-served neighborhood. It has created outreach programs for children who live in the neighborhood. The Museum also partners with community organizations to develop crime prevention programs to enhance the quality of life for children and families in the neighborhood.
The BPPCM has been awarded an IMLS Museum Grant for African-American History and Culture, with support from the Southeast Overtown/Park West Community Development Agency (CRA) and Florida International University (FIU). This grant, along with the support of the CRA and FIU, will provide the resources necessary to articulate a clear vision and viable strategic plan for future development with other museums, educational institutions and community based organizations. Key to the realization of these outcomes is the hiring of an experienced, energetic and engaged museum professional to serve as Museum Director.
