Teaching Artists

Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach

The Norton Museum of Art is seeking Teaching Artists for full-time, non-exempt employment as studio and gallery teachers working in Museum and in the community, working with children, youth and adult audiences.

The Teaching Artists will report to the Associate Curator of Education for Youth & Family Programs.

Job Responsibilities:

Afterschool Arts Outreach:

  • Under direction of Associate Curator of Education for Youth and Family Programs, research, design, and teach art lessons that are multicultural, arts integrated, exhibition-related, addressing creative youth development for children and youth (ages 6-17) at afterschool community sites
  • Exercise excellent classroom management skills 
  • Record and report attendance at each class
  • Order and manage art supplies for program at each site in accordance with Museum budget
  • Manage studio space provided at each of the community centers, maintaining a clean and orderly space
  • Schedule and lead three tours to the Museum for each community sites

Extended School Tours:

  • Under direction of Associate Curator of Education for School and Teacher Programs, design and teach art projects related to school tours Learning to Look, STEAM, and Storytelling in Art
  • Exercise excellent classroom management skills 
  • Order and manage art supplies in accordance with Museum budget

Art After Dark:

  • Working with the Coordinator of Art After Dark, determine the schedule of Art After Dark hands-on art projects for audiences of various ages; determine art supplies necessary for the projects and order as necessary

Weekend Workshops:

  • Teach a variety of afternoon workshops for adults and for youth ranging from exhibition related projects to drop-in life drawing classes;
  • Provide assistance to guest artists who visit the Museum to provide workshops

1 pm Tours:

  • Once a week, lead 1 pm public tours of special exhibitions and collection topics

Job Specifications and Skills:
BA, experience as a teaching artist with all ages

Must have professional art teaching experience; must be detail-oriented and well-organized, with excellent verbal and written communication skills; must work effectively with diverse audiences, demonstrate independent judgment in professional settings and be a team player. Knowledge and comfort with Microsoft Office.
