Public Programs Manager

Job Summary: Working under the general supervision of the Director of Education, the Public Programs Manager makes the VBMA’s collection and special exhibitions accessible to visitors of all ages —including adults, children, and families—through a broad range of creative programming.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following, but not limited to:
• Conceptualizes, develops, and executes a robust schedule of exhibition- and collection-related programs for adults, including lectures, film series, concerts, performances, and new initiatives.
• Conceptualizes, develops, and executes engaging year-round programming for families, including Museum Stories (weekly), Museum Babies and Toddlers and Museum Studios (monthly), and Holidays at the Museum and Children’s Art Festival (annual community events).
• Works collaboratively to plan and implement major exhibition lecture series.
• Oversees the development and management of the VBMA’s interactive children’s space, the Art Zone.
• Supervises Film Studies Coordinator, Art Zone Facilitators, teaching artists, interns, volunteers (including docents), and teen volunteers.
• Oversees public programs staffing needs, including recruiting, scheduling, and overseeing volunteers and staff assisting with programs.
• Coordinates with education staff on administrative tasks to support public programs, including contracts, correspondence, travel itineraries, honoraria, payroll, and purchasing supplies.
• Works with appropriate departments and individual staff members to coordinate all public programs’ logistics and set-up needs.
• Evaluates adult and family programs regularly to make sure initiatives are meeting audience needs.
• In coordination with the Director of Education, recruits, interviews, and recommends candidates for hire, as necessary.
• Develops and tracks program budgets, grant proposals and reports, and other financial needs.
• In coordination with the development department, actively participates in the grant-writing and reporting processes.
• Promotes the VBMA’s public programs by participating in local, state, and national professional development; stays abreast of lifelong learning research and best practices for public programs.
• Works with Communications and Marketing staff on promotional materials, press releases, and social media.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, education, museum education, or related field; MA preferred.
• At least 3-4 years of museum experience focused on successful programming for a variety of audiences.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while working on multiple projects simultaneously and achieve deadlines.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements:

• Knowledge of a broad range of periods and styles in art as well as visual literacy strategies and teaching methods.
• Committed to welcoming and engaging people of all ages, perspectives, backgrounds, and abilities.
• Proven track record of creating mission-driven programming that aligns audience needs with collections and exhibitions.
• Experience cultivating high-profile speakers and managing high-volume programs.
• Superior written and verbal communication skills, including excellent public speaking abilities.
• Proven ability to manage multiple programs for multiple audiences concurrently.
• Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers.
• Proficient in website design (WordPress preferred) and with CRM software (Blackbaud preferred).
• Level two background check required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
• Able to meet and perform the physical requirements and to work effectively in an environment which is typical of this position.
• Frequent lifting, bending, climbing, stooping, and pulling. Frequent repetitive motions.
• Continuous standing and walking.
• Able to work evenings and weekends, as necessary.
