Expanding the Narrative - Museums Sharing Diversity

Location: HistoryMiami Museum, Miami

Florida is one of the most diverse places in our nation—a mecca of multiculturalism. How do our museums share the diversity of our culture? Can we do a better job at being more inclusive of all those who live in our great state? Diversity and Inclusion should be at the forefront of collecting, programming, exhibitions and hiring practices in our museums. In this workshop, we will start the discussion about how we share diversity, barriers that exist to changing our own practices to become more inclusive, and provide some resources to take home to your museums. The day will begin with a panel of professionals from a diverse variety of museums who will share their experiences. The YES Institute of Miami will provide an overview of gender and gender identity, what makes visitors feel included and safe, and use mock scenarios to work through best practices in this area. HistoryMiami will provide a tour of their Making Miami Home program in their Tropical Dreams: A People’s History of South Florida, which will be followed by small workgroup discussions about how we can make all feel welcome and invested in Florida’s museums.

Speakers & Panelists:

Martha Bireda, Executive Director, The Blanchard House Museum of African American History and Culture of Charlotte County
