ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The USF Contemporary Art Museum (CAM) with Graphicstudio (GS) and the Public Art Program compose the Institute for Research in Art. CAM organizes, presents, commissions and travels exhibitions, commissions public art projects, and manages a collection with a focus on contemporary works on paper. CAM researches and strives to identify and work with artists that can stimulate and shape cultural debate in our community and beyond, and actively engages audiences in educational programs including lectures, symposia, workshops, and community-based projects.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Exhibition Designer collaborates with visiting national and international artists, curators, and other staff members on the design of temporary exhibitions for the Contemporary Art Museum. These exhibitions can be in the Contemporary Art Museum Gallery spaces, other buildings on the USF campuses, or in other buildings off campus as part of the museum’s corporate partnership program. The Exhibition Designer also coordinates with the Curator of the Collection on issues of facility and collection storage conditions. This position interprets and works with Museum and University administration to implement current USF policies and AAM accreditation standards to ensure best practices for effective management of the museum facility and operations.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages the planning and installation of museum exhibitions.

• • Coordinates the preparation of artwork and other materials for exhibitions and the collection.
  • Researches and sources specialized materials and equipment for use in exhibition planning and development.
  • Collaborates with exhibition curator, exhibiting artists, and preparatory team on installation design, schedule, and execution.
• Supervises museum preparators and interns.
  • Advises the Director and other leadership on preparatory staff requirements
  • Provides training for preparator staff and other museum technicians on museum methods and safe use of wood shop and tools.
• Directs the design, fabrication, construction, and install of technically complex museum exhibitions.
  • Designs alterations to museum galleries to meet the needs of exhibition, including temporary walls, exhibition furniture and lighting design.
  • Determines layout of artworks within the exhibition space.
  • Responsible for lighting, sound, and multi-media design and installation.
  • Designs artwork labels and other didactic labels.
  • Researches electronic equipment and other materials.
  • Manages archival framing and matting of artworks.
  • Designs and manages construction of exhibition furniture
• Provides day to day monitoring of the museum facility (environmental conditions within the facility and the physical plant) and reports on maintenance requirements.
• Consults with Museum Administration and USF Facilities on physical plant requirements.
• Participates on the team that designs and installs exhibitions in corporate spaces as part of the Corporate Partnership Program.
• Will work occasional nights and weekends.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Exhibition Designer must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull a variety of tools, equipment, and materials. Must be able to climb, balance, reach overhead, stoop, kneel and crouch to gain access to equipment. Requires safe operation of a variety of shop equipment and power tools. Will occasionally be exposed to noise and vibration from operating machinery. Must be able to safely lift 50 lbs. May be required to work in confined areas to access equipment. The majority of this position requires working on-site.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM:

• Bachelor’s degree in visual arts discipline.
• 5 years of demonstrated and documented experience in art exhibition and space design in an art museum or gallery.

PREFERRED:

• Master’s in Fine Arts/Studio or other related discipline and 7 years of demonstrated and documented experience with progressive responsibility in art exhibition and space design, including contemporary art exhibitions.
• Proficient skill in 3D (3 Dimensional) modeling tools such as Google Sketchup (preferred), AutoCAD, or other or other industry accepted software as well as Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience with supervising and working with a team of other creative professionals.
• Knowledge of museum exhibit design and best practices, construction, carpentry, and finish work.
• Knowledge of museum standards for handling, installing, and packing museum objects and art.
• Knowledge of lighting design.
• Ability to determine labor, equipment, and material costs on projects.
• Experience with exhibition and object photography.
