Our Planetarium features one of the most advanced all-digital projection systems in the world, where we present astronomy programs the whole family will enjoy.
The Parker Manatee Rehabilitation Habitat is part of Florida’s Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Partnership, having served as a temporary home to more than 40 rehabilitating manatees since 1998. Additionally, we have received a $550,000 grant to expand our manatee rehabilitation facilities.
Chief Executive Officer Position Summary
Reporting directly to the board, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has overall strategic, fiscal, development and operational responsibility for The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature, Inc. (Museum) programs and policies. The CEO provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the daily operation of the Museum and works with the Board to develop and implement the ongoing strategic initiatives for the institution to achieve the mission and vision. The CEO serves as a non-voting member on the Board of Trustees and carries out the policies regarding the Museum which have been adopted by the Board. The CEO works with all elected officials, state and local authorities, business leaders, educational personnel, and other colleagues in the museum and/or entertainment industries to ensure the attainment of all museum goals as established by the Board of Trustees.
The CEO must have a passion for natural history and animal welfare and be able to further The Bishop’s role in being an important partner in the formal and informal education of visitors and students and ensuring the visitor’s experience is exceptional, meets a high quality standard, and is worthwhile.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• The ideal CEO will have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10-15 years of demonstrated management as a director of a museum or a major department within a large museum operation. Experience with other “visitor or guest centered” organizations would also be welcome. Examples include entertainment, botanical gardens, history centers, art galleries, parks, etc. Advanced degrees would be a plus.
• A demonstrated passion for and understanding of the Bishop Museum mission and purpose.
• Experience with financial management of a museum or visitor and guest centered organization budget.
• Demonstrated record of successful fundraising activity and the ability to cultivate and sustain a strong fundraising program to enhance financial support for the Museum and its initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of non-profit management, either gained educationally or through experience, and demonstrated experience working with and for non-profit boards and board governance.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, and a comfort level with presentations both planned and spontaneous. Can effectively relate to individuals of all circumstances and diverse backgrounds and expertise.
• Demonstrated strong capabilities leading strategic planning and forward-thinking initiatives.
• Proven abilities as a leader and manager of a large professional staff.
• Expected to want to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
• Project software skills including MS Teams, Excel, MS Office suite.
• Demonstrate the ability to embrace change while understanding that it should be introduced with respect and sensitivity for others, and for what came before.

Salary and benefits: Salary commensurate with experience. Full benefits plan includes medical, dental, and vision, plus life insurance and disability plan options. The museum also offers a 403(b) plan, with discretionary matches. A relocation bonus may be provided, as appropriate.
