Summary/Objective
The Controller is responsible for Orlando Science Center’s accounting and financial reporting operations. This individual ensures internal control of assets including cash, inventories, property, plant, and equipment. The Controller is responsible for the reporting of operating activities and financial position for month-end and annual audit. This position supervises day-to-day, month-end, and year-end accounting/reporting of accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger accounting, and payroll. The Controller is also responsible for the reconciliation of balance sheet accounts and analysis of income statement accounts.
Essential Functions
• Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
• Maintains chart of accounts, fixed asset inventory, and depreciation schedules
• Creates, maintains, and monitors internal controls.
• Responsible for assuring adherence to proper revenue recognition for both contributions (unrestricted, restricted, and in-kind) and earned revenue.
• Prepares standard and adjusting journal entries for monthly and year-end financial statements.
• Reviews and posts entries in accounting system
• Compiles financial transactions for accounts payable, cash receipts, and payroll while ensuring proper accrual entries
• Prepares monthly financial statements to include income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement/forecast and report of capital expenditures utilizing reporting software.
• Analyze revenues and expenses vs. budget in order to prepare any necessary adjusting entries or accruals. Reviews trial balance to ensure that cash transactions, allocations, and prepaid expenses are recorded.
• Maintains support of balance sheet accounts including cash, receivables, fixed assets, prepaid expense, inventories, accounts payable, program deposits, accrued payroll, and deferred revenue.
• Prepares supporting schedules for annual audit(s) and IRS Form 990 including statement of financial position, statement of activities, depreciation, statement of cash flows, release of net assets from restriction, and net asset summary.
• Primary point-of-contact for independent auditors during annual audit(s) and tax return preparation.
• Directs and facilitates the budgeting process.
• Timely and accurate tax payments and filings including sales tax.
• Interacts with departmental vice presidents, directors, and other business staff throughout OSC.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or other relevant area or equivalent experience.
2. Experience: 5 years of supervisory experience in a financial office.
3. Certifications: N/A
Preferred Qualifications
• 3+ years of experience with non-profit accounting standards.
• Proficiency with accounting systems, financial reporting software, databases, and spreadsheets.
• Working knowledge of time and attendance software.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
• Ability to effectively communicate accounting and financial principles to nonfinancial colleagues.
Supervisory Responsibility
• Assists, trains, and mentors accounting staff in accounts payable, cash receipts, general ledger, and payroll. Includes reviewing coding of accounts payable, cash postings, payroll labor distribution, and approving journal entries.
• Development and training of the accounting system, Excel, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

Expected Hours of Work
• This position is a full-time salaried position. This position primarily works Monday through Friday for 8 hours per day, for a total of 40 hours per week.
Travel
• Local travel may be required on occasion (less than 5%).
Telecommuting
• This position is required to be onsite 60% of the time.
