EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR VACANCY
The Board of Directors of Dunedin History Museum in Dunedin, Florida is searching for a visionary leader to be the next Executive Director. An entrepreneurial and strategic thinker with past success in the museum industry who will thrive in this role. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead a 4 – 6 person team to further position The Dunedin History Museum for near- and long-term success.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for implementing the museum’s mission, growing its financial sustainability, leading the museum through the AAM accreditation process, and expanding key internal and external relationships, among other duties.
Summary of Responsibilities:
• Works in conjunction with the Board to develop the strategic direction and establish initiatives to fulfill the mission of the Museum and increase local and statewide awareness and prominence.
• Directs the museum’s operations, including development, education and public programming, finance, external communications, and staffing.
• Manages and leads the full-time staff of three, 1 part-time staff, and volunteers.
• Leads and participates in all fundraising and development activities, including grant writing and applications, along with developing relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors.
• Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.
• Directs the overall development of public relations and marketing initiatives. Develops an effective communications plan to raise the profile of the museum.
• Manages, secures, and maintains the property and facilities of the Museum, oversee the collections held in public trust.
• Works 40 hours per week with occasional evenings and weekends required.
ABOUT THE MUSEUM
The mission of the Dunedin Museum is to enrich community pride by sharing Dunedin’s legacy and heritage, to collect and preserve the historical artifacts and documents of Dunedin, and to foster quality intergenerational learning and historical exhibits. The Dunedin Museum maintains its collections and exhibits conforming to the American Alliance of Museum standards.
The 501(c)(3) Dunedin Museum contains approximately 2,000 artifacts, 2,500 photographs, and a library containing 200 volumes of local and Florida history. Included in the collection is an electronic archive of the Dunedin Times Newspaper, from 1924 through 1965.
Permanent exhibit segments feature statewide topics such as the railroad and citrus industries. Regional topics include Dunedin’s multicultural origins, our pioneering families, sports history of Dunedin, industries in Dunedin, development of the alligator tank used by the U.S. Marines during WWII in the Pacific, and natural habitats such as Caladesi and Honeymoon Isle.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES
• Minimum education requires a Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history or business administration. Advanced degree preferred.
• Five years of experience in a museum or similar nonprofit organization. At least three to five years in managerial level preferred.
• Ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction. Experience developing and implementing strategic plans.
• Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, non-profits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.
• Strong record of success in fundraising and audience development.
• Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.
• Proven ability to work cooperatively, diplomatically, and effectively with Boards, volunteers, and in community relations and outreach capacities.
• Competence in managing museum operations, including personnel matters. Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully with, museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.
• Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget. Strong business management skills.
• Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills. Working knowledge of spreadsheet, database, email, calendar/scheduling, and word processing software.
• Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings when needed. Salary is commensurate with experience. Competitive benefits package.
SALARY RANGE
$50,000 – $55,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
