Our Exhibit Designer & Developer should demonstrate a passion for science, excellent problem-solving capacity and be a curious individual. This position works in conjunction with the Experience Design and Production team to research and develop fun, educational, and memorable exhibit experiences supporting the Science Center’s mission. Working under the direction of their Director or project lead, the Exhibit Designer & Developer helps to establish visual representation for all new exhibits and establishes experiential goals while working with the team to conduct research and support the content development process. The Exhibit Designer & Developer may develop exhibit research documents and draft punchy, compelling, and relatable exhibit copy. Overall, this position is responsible for visual conceptualizing, writing, and editing copy for Science Center exhibitions and the website, conducting project-related research, designing exhibit content ideas; assists in acquiring multimedia, and works with external advisors or contractors and other experts to see the vision come to life.
Essential Functions
Collaborates closely with their Director or project manager to develop design concepts and plans for temporary exhibits and new permanent installations. Creates two dimensional designs, quick concept sketches and renderings as needed in software such as Adobe Suite and Wacom. An Apple Macintosh desktop is the creative design platform.
Writes educational and instructional exhibit labels and assists the Director of Experience Design and Production in overall theming of exhibit experiences.
Conducts thorough research to ensure scientific information is clearly expressed and accurate.
Collaborates with graphic design, technology and education interpretation on graphic, technology and interpretive elements of each exhibition or installation.
Provides a clear, focused narrative voice that is consistent across exhibits.
Assists with the placement of collection objects or informational materials in exhibit framework and art gallery.
Receives design direction and critiques from the partners and colleagues to create a stronger, better result.
Operates effectively under time constraints and meet deadlines.
Ability to work with minimal supervision, both alone and in teams.
Must be detail oriented, able to prioritize tasks and able to work under pressure with
multiple deadlines.
Be aware of relevant health and safety issues with design implementations and adhere to ADA requirements when necessary.
Oversees a team of volunteers to execute data collection, conduct surveys and evaluations, and prototype visitor experiences.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Education: No formal educational requirements.
2. Experience: Three to five years of work experience in the field of exhibit design and/or development, or a general background in museum studies combined with knowledge of the exhibit topics and experiential objectives may be substituted for advanced academic degrees.
3. Certifications: No formal certificates required.
Preferred Qualifications
· Journalism or editorial experience
· Experience with scientific research and statistical data analysis
· Large format graphic design experience a plus
· Must be proficient in Microsoft Office or Macintosh Office software
· Must be highly motivated, organized, and demonstrate a willingness to adapt positively to corporate change
Supervisory Responsibility
· Trains and mentor’s adult volunteers and interns in evaluation, data analysis and surveying techniques.
Physical Demands
· Must be able to stand for extended periods.
Expected Hours of Work
· Must be able to work weekends. Occasional evening work required.
