The College of Fine Arts at Florida State University invites applications for the position of Director of the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA), a faculty member at the tenured or tenure-earning rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. MoFA originated as the Fine Arts Gallery for Florida State University’s School of Visual Arts. In 1971, the gallery moved into 16,000 square feet of exhibition, art storage, and work spaces in the newly-constructed Fine Arts Building, which continues to house the museum on FSU's main campus. The gallery’s collecting, curation, research, and educational programs evolved over time, and in 1994 the gallery was redesignated as the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts. MoFA currently holds accreditation until 2026 and was first accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM) in 2003, and AAM granted reaccreditation in 2012 at which time its innovative program of exhibitions and publications was cited as "exemplary."

Responsibilities
The Director of the Museum of Fine Arts (MoFA) reports to the Dean of the College of Fine Arts and oversees a team of 3 full-time staff and several part-time staff. The Director also manages the contributions of a faculty curator and other curatorial faculty as appropriate.

This position:

  • Plans, develops, coordinates, and implements all museum activities thoughtfully designed to engage and inspire an annual audience of approximately 18,000 visitors.
  • Oversees an annual budget in excess of $600,000.
  • Maintains over 7,000 sq. feet of gallery space presenting from 10-12 original exhibitions each year. Promotes and preserves a permanent collection of over 6,000 artworks.
  • Teaches a 1/1 course load in museum studies and/or related areas.
  • The Director is responsible for significant grant writing to support essential museum activities and is expected to fundraise and cultivate collectors and prospective donors on behalf of the institution. Providing artistic and executive leadership, the Director works with an active Advisory Council of university leaders as well as community educators to advance the museum's reputation for excellence in North Florida, across the state, and throughout the country.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a compassionate, engaging, innovative, and inspiring leader and educator with the desire and experience to develop dynamic programs in collaboration and consultation with MoFA and College faculty and staff.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a terminal degree in a related field.
  • Hold a record of achievement in teaching, academic research, and service appropriate for a tenured appointment.
  • Demonstrate a proven commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion that creates an environment where diverse faculty, staff, and students thrive.
  • Present a strong record of relevant experience in art museum/gallery operations to include administration, collections management, publications, budget development and oversight, and supervision of professional staff.
  • Possess excellent writing and communication skills, including established grant writing capabilities. Demonstrate effective leadership and the ability to maintain effective working relationships by utilizing clear communication, appropriate delegation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups, including museum staff, university faculty and students, museum patrons, guest artists, guest curators, and volunteers/community members, to develop annual programming that is inclusive of all populations and varied in topics and point of view.

Preferred

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience in Art, Art History, or Museum Studies in higher education.
  • A strong record of fundraising and cultivating relationships with collectors and prospective donors. An understanding of and enthusiasm for the educational role of art museums.
  • Professional goals which are consistent with the mission of our institution and our programs
  • An established record of effective leadership, team-building, and collaboration as well as the ability to attract, motivate, and manage a talented staff.
  • The ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

The Florida State University College of Fine Arts is a place where learning and creativity are nurtured through instruction, research, and practice. The College is a close-knit community of faculty, students, and professionals that functions as an art and design conservatory and liberal arts hybrid within a major research university. It is home to a unique combination of visual arts, performing art, and design studios, classrooms, performance spaces, galleries, and a museum. The current student enrollment encompasses nearly more than 850 undergraduate and 300 graduate students, working to become successful artists, designers, researchers, and professionals in their fields. The College comprises the School of Dance, the School of Theatre, the Department of Interior Architecture & Design, the Department of Art, the Department of Art Education, and the Department of Art History. It is supported by more than 100 full-time faculty, 50 adjunct faculty, 110 staff members, and a budget of approximately $19.3 million.

Pay Plan
This is a 12-Month Faculty position. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience.
