POSITION SUMMARY: Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is seeking a Director of Curatorial Services to serve as the lead of curatorial and interpretive programs, responsible for the development and execution of an integrated strategy for MOSH collections, exhibits, public and education programs. The Director will be responsible for the coordinated growth of these areas as MOSH expands operations in its new home and will be the lead staff responsible for the coordination of the museum’s content, programming, and collections initiatives. A special responsibility will be to serve as the lead curator for the Center for Innovation. To accomplish these duties, the Director will recruit and oversee a staff of museum professionals in exhibits, collections, library, public programs, and education in preparation to move into a 140,000 SF new museum facility.

The Director of Curatorial Services will be a newly established position at MOSH. The Director will report to the CEO and will be on the executive management team for MOSH.

Lead Curatorial Planning: Works with department personnel and museum leadership, leads the development and implementation of an integrated curatorial and interpretive plan for the museum’s exhibits, collections, education and public programs, including the Center for Innovation.

Management: Leads an expanding team of museum professionals in the areas of exhibits, programs, education, and collections.

Executive Team: Serves as a member of the executive management team, and works collaboratively with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Finance Officer, Director of Development, Director of Marketing and Chief of Staff to ensure effective and coordinated implementation of museum plans.

Budgeting: Develops and manages the curatorial services operating and personnel (non-capital) budget.

Community Relations: Serves as lead spokesperson for the mission and purpose of MOSH curatorial and interpretive programs.

Collections Management: Supervises collection and content managers.

Exhibit Planning: Supervises exhibit manager.

Educational and Program Initiatives: Supervises public program and education departments.

Experience: At least five years senior curatorial experience at a science museum or equivalent facility, including demonstrated success in creating and executing exhibits, managing collections, and developing public and education programs. At least three years of hands-on experience successfully leading, managing, and growing a diverse professional staff. Substantial experience in effectively managing large budgets and success in completing complex long-term projects.

Education: Master of Science, museum studies or a related STEM field, Ph.D. preferred, with demonstrated excellent writing and communication skills

Communicator: Able to articulate the goals and mission of MOSH in writing, in public and with the media. Excited about serving as a lead spokesperson for the museum’s curatorial and interpretive programs.

Energetic: Brings a can-do sense of urgency to the museum.

Audience-centric: Sensitive to the central importance of the needs of MOSH’s customers – from school groups to new visitors to the larger community.

Intellectual Strength: Brings an academic, research or related expertise that gives credibility to MOSH.

Excellent Manager and Internal Communicator: Must possess a proven record of excellent managerial capabilities, including experience managing creative staff. Ability to create results-oriented work plans, foster team cohesion and create an environment that is both goal-focused and collegial.

Team Player: Demonstrated ability to function as a member of an integrated management team and to work effectively with the executive management team and board to advocate for MOSH’s mission.

Ethical: Demonstrates the highest level of integrity and ethical practices in all affairs.

Hours are generally Monday-Friday, between 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.  After-hours and weekend work may be required.
