Director of People & IDEA

Norton Museum of Art, Palm Beach

With a rich history, outstanding collections, beautiful new campus for sharing magnificent art and groundbreaking programs, The Norton Museum of Art is a source of inspiration, joy, education and connection for our large circle of artists, supporters, friends, and the people of the Palm Beaches.  We are seeking a dynamic Director of People & IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access) to join our museum team.  The Director is responsible for the management of the museum’s Human Resources function, including developing and executing effective strategies to attract, develop, reward, and retain employees.   The Director of People & IDEA collaborates with the Director/CEO and the senior leadership team to build, reinforce, and safeguard the organizational culture to ensure a highly engaged and productive staff.

Job Responsibilities

Talent Acquisition

  • Define and lead talent sourcing strategy to recruit talented and diverse candidates for roles at the museum.
  • Work with hiring managers to understand resource needs and develop job descriptions.
  • Facilitate the hiring process for all open positions, in partnership with the relevant hiring manager.
  • Oversee training for hiring managers (including interview best practice, guidelines for implementing a fair and objective process, etc.).

Talent Development

  • Oversee performance management system, guiding managers through the complete performance management process including taking accountability of the process, goal setting, providing ongoing feedback to staff, recommendations for turning feedback into development actions and PIP (performance improvement process) up to and including terminations if necessary. 
  • Manage new hire onboarding process which incorporates education about the museum, creates connections to support cross functional collaboration, and sets the tone for a professional, inclusive, and productive workplace.
  • Responsible for providing coaching to all managers related to developing effective leadership skills.
  • Facilitate manager and staff training in support of professional and career development within the museum.

IDEA, Culture, and Engagement

  • Work with Director/CEO, Board Diversity Committee and Staff Diversity Committee to implement the museum’s IDEA (inclusion, diversity, equity, and access) initiatives.
  • In collaboration with Chief Marketing & Communications Officer support initiatives and opportunities to promote internal communication, teamwork, and collaboration.
  • Periodically conduct employee check-ins, surveys or other approaches to ensure an understanding of the employee experience and work environment.

HR, Benefits and Payroll Administration

  • Responsible for the design and oversight of the museum's benefit programs and management of external carrier relationships.
  • Responsible for overseeing bi-weekly payroll process and maintenance of all employee payroll records.
  • Maintain and update as needed all Human Resource policies and procedures including Employee Handbook.
  • Meet with Director/CEO and CFO at least annually to conduct compensation analysis and benchmarking for Norton pay rates within nonprofit sector.
  • Develop and recommend annual benefits strategy to ensure the museum is offering a comprehensive benefits package to staff.


  • 10+ years’ experience in Human Resources
  • Skilled in executing Human Resource core processes in areas including recruitment, talent development, employee engagement, compensation, performance management, benefits, payroll, and diversity and inclusion.   
  • Proven ability to develop relationships and establish trust across diverse groups internal and external to the museum. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives keeping all in balance and delivering on time and on budget.  
  • Positive, “can-do” attitude, team-oriented, attention to detail, results driven and demonstrated initiative.
  • Bachelor's degree required.  Master’s degree a plus.
  • SHRM certification a plus
