Executive Director

POSITION SUMMARY
Position of Executive Director the World AIDS Museum and Educational Center (WAM) serves as WAM’s Administrator reporting to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors. This is a dynamic role for a highly motivated, innovative, engaging and passionate leader who understands the historical significance of the HIV Epidemic’s timeline, its impact on communities and factors contributing to stigma. The Executive Director is accountable for all aspects of the museum’s operation which includes strategy, marketing and public relations, development, exhibit curation, events and programs, facilities, financial management, human resources, technology and security. The Executive Director is also directly accountable for the guest experience, membership expansion and continuous improvement of the museum. Success in this role requires moving the organization ahead while preserving the qualities from which the organization has derived its success. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader and motivator committed to fostering a positive and forward-thinking environment.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The following illustrative responsibilities are not intended to describe every function that may be required by position of Executive Director to successfully lead WAM. The omission of specific statements or duties does not preclude the Board from assigning additional duties which are industry standards and advance the museum.

  1. Building off a recently completed organizational assessment and visioning project, create and drive a new Strategic Plan that moves WAM towards a national excellence within the museum industry.
  2. Develop annual goals and objectives aligned with the Strategic Plan and ensure achievement of near-term operational goals and objectives as well as progress toward longer-term strategic objectives.
  3. Serve as a leader and influencer in the national, state, and local arts and cultural community to promote WAM, and its role in the arts and education industry.
  4. Build and maintain strong relationships with key influencers, donors, artists, collectors, members, educators, philanthropic organizations, corporate leaders, peer institutions, academic institutions, school districts, media, global, national, state, county and city representatives.
  5. Lead large scale development and marketing efforts that expands WAM’s profile and brand and presence at the global, national, state and local levels.
  6. Responsible for the development of WAM’s Annual Operating Budget including planning, preparing, monitoring and administering; presentation to the Board for approval; recommends opportunities to grow and develop new revenue streams for the museum. Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.
  7. Responsible for the creation and implementation of WAM’s Annual Development Plan; and participates in all aspects of fundraising and development activities, including grant writing, reporting and fostering strong relationships with funders, foundations, corporations and individual donors. Implements new fundraising strategies that bring in additional outside revenue from public, corporate, foundation, and individual sources; effectively balancing income and expenditures.
  8. Oversee day-to-day operations of the museum and activities including administrative, fiscal management, human resources, exhibits, curation, programs, facilities, events, technology and security.
  9. Utilizes traditional print, social, and other forms of new media to bring visitors to the museum and foster museum growth.
  10. 10. Continuously grow and expand the museum’s role in the community serving visitors through high profile exhibits, programs and guest experiences.

QUALIFICATIONS
A Bachelor’s Degree is required with a minimum of 10 years’ progressive senior museum or not-for-profit management. The education requirement may be substituted with a combination of education and relevant senior museum work or related non-profit. Must possess exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. A proven development and fundraising track record is required. The selected candidate will have an outstanding record of operational results in the museum or arts-related, or education or HIV non-profit field.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS
Travel with occasional overnight stay may be necessary; work schedule will include some evenings and weekends.

Percentage of efforts: Fundraising/Revenue Generation (70%), Administration (10%), PR/Marketing (10%), and Human Resources (staff and volunteers) (10%).

Salary commensurate with experience: $65,000-$80,000.

Selected candidates will receive pre-interview screening questions and must be available by appointment at a TBD in early 2022.
