Job Title:  Museum Facilities Coordinator

Organization: Florida State Fairgrounds/Cracker Country Rural Florida Living History Museum    

FLSA Status:  Non-Exempt    

Department/Reports to:  Director of Museum Operations              

Responsible for maintenance of Cracker Country Living History Museum historic structures, buildings and grounds.  Plans and constructs historic replica structures, artifacts and museum exhibit components.  Coordinates landscaping and care of livestock collection.  Fair responsibilities include coordination of placement and maintenance needs of museum demonstrators, vendors and entertainers.


  1. Performs routine maintenance and coordinates assistance from Florida State Fairgrounds’ Facilities Department or outside contractors as needed.
  2. Conducts periodic inspections of historic structures, buildings and grounds to assess and evaluate conditions.  Initiates preventative maintenance.  Determines supply, material and tool needs. Advises Museum Director of maintenance needs in a timely manner.
  3. Organizes and maintains woodworking and maintenance workshop.  Keeps wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment in good repair.
  4. Oversees and participates in landscape maintenance as needed.
  5. With Museum Director, plans and executes historic restoration and rehabilitation projects.
  6. Assists Museum Director in planning of yearly maintenance, landscape and construction budget.
  7. Assists Museum Director with development of specifications for large bid projects.
  8. Schedules and supervises temporary labor force working on maintenance and landscape projects. Supervises docents working on maintenance, garden and livestock projects.
  9. Provides and coordinates care for museum livestock collection using best practices of animal husbandry. Oversees care of contract livestock at the museum during the Florida State Fair and special museum events.
  10. Coordinates load-in/out and setup of exhibits and attends to all maintenance needs of historic craft and trade demonstrators and food vendors in Cracker Country during the annual Florida State Fair and special museum events.
  11. Works with Museum Director and other Cracker Country staff to stage the yard and facilities for school programs, special events and the annual Florida State Fair.
  12. Builds and repairs reproduction historic tools and other items for use in interpretive programs.
  13. Operates blacksmith shop and performs historic interpretation as needed during school programs and special events.  Conducts blacksmith operation and safety training classes for docent historic interpreters.
  14. Works with the Museum Director to promote and maintain the museum’s Service Theme/Mission and Standards of Performance.
  15. Represents Cracker Country on the Florida State Fair Authority Safety Committee.

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent; vocational training in construction trades highly preferred.  Minimum 5 years of experience in the maintenance or construction industry.  Carpentry experience required.  Experience with restoration of historic wooden structures in a professional or museum setting highly preferred.  Experience with historic trades, woodworking and blacksmithing a plus.


  • Extensive knowledge of carpentry and a working knowledge of plumbing, landscape maintenance and preventative maintenance
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn and replicate 19th Century construction techniques
  • Knowledge of gardening techniques and livestock care
  • Strong proficiency in the safe operation of large equipment
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other museum and fairgrounds staff, volunteers and outside contractors to achieve maintenance goals for museum buildings and grounds.
  • Intermediate Math Skills (calculate figures/discounts, proportions, area, etc.)
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook)
  • Ability to work flexible schedule

Duties are performed primarily outside of an office setting.  Must be able to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk hear and lift or move (more than 20 pounds). Also environmental and other exposures such as wet/humid conditions, work near mechanical parts, work in high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions.
