POSITION TITLE: Curator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
The Curator shall operate and administer the exhibition program within the framework of the policies, plans, and approved budget of DFAC.

Reports to the President / CEO.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• To act as DFAC’s aesthetic watchdog, working with all departments to ensure all of DFAC’s programming is consistent with DFAC’s high standards.
• To plan, lead and direct exhibitions in the selection and planning of the yearly exhibit schedules at least one year in advance.
• To prepare ideas and concepts for exhibitions consistent with the mission of DFAC.
• To obtain in a timely manner from all exhibiting artists and/or institutions documentation of works to be exhibited, including, but not limited to high-resolution digital images, biographies and descriptions.
• To contact and coordinate the involvement of guest curators and artists featured in gallery exhibits.
• To supervise employees and volunteers associated with preparation, installation and maintenance of the exhibitions.
• To forecast budget estimates of the exhibitions in terms of costs, special requirements and scheduling.
• To develop grant requests to meet specific project needs of the exhibition program.
• To coordinate and present student, faculty exhibits in spaces outside of DFAC.
• Develop activities, tours, demonstrations, lectures and other educational materials supporting the exhibition program.
• Collaborate with Education Departments in developing exhibition related classes and workshops.
• To assist the Preparator or contracted person(s) with exhibition installations, as needed.
• To cultivate relationships with area artists, art institutions and community partners.
• Be a public presence representing DFAC in the media, community, and various other outlets.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the DFAC, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other members.

Performs routine administrative/office work as required, including but not limited to answering the telephone, typing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, conducting and attending meetings, entering computer data, etc.

Performs related duties as required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Four year college degree or commensurate work experience.

PERFORMANCE APTITUDES

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to coordinate, manage, strategize and/or correlate data and/or information.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to function in a supervisory/managerial capacity for co-workers and volunteers. Includes the ability to make decisions on procedural and technical levels.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to use, operate and/or handle equipment such as a computer, copier, calculator, telephone.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to use a variety of tools necessary for gallery preparations, reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, to calculate decimals and percentages; may require the ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical synthesis functions. Ability to deal with several concrete and abstract variables, and to analyze major problems that require complex planning for interrelated activities that can span one or several work units.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgments, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the direction, control and planning of an entire program or set of programs.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in sedentary to light work involving moving from one area of the office to another; some positions require sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled repetitive movements, such as data entry, filing and/or the use of office equipment or supplies.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual and auditory perception and discrimination as well as oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.

Knowledge of Work: Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures of DFAC as they pertain to the performance of essential duties of the Executive Director.

Quality of Work: Maintains high standards of accuracy in exercising duties and responsibilities.

Quantity of Work: Performs described Essential Functions and related assignments efficiently and effectively in order to produce quantity of work which consistently meets established standards and expectations.

Dependability: Assumes responsibility for completing assigned work. Completes assigned work within deadlines in accordance with directives, policy, standards and prescribed procedures. Maintains accountability for assigned responsibilities in the technical, human and conceptual areas.

Attendance: Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding absenteeism and tardiness. Provides adequate notice to Executive Director with respect to vacation time and leave requests.

Initiative and Enthusiasm: Maintains an enthusiastic, self-reliant approach to meet job responsibilities and accountabilities. Strives to anticipate work to be accomplished and initiates proper and acceptable action for the completion of work with a minimum of supervision and instruction.
