Executive Director

The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum (Museum) is looking for a visionary, inspiring, motivated, and highly experienced leader to be its next Executive Director. This individual should be an innovative connector, savvy financial analyzer, honest evaluator, successful in resource development and stewardship, effective in conflict resolution and has a commitment to accountability to ensure the health, growth, and sustainability of the Museum.
The Museum is a niche Maritime Museum, one of the most visited lighthouses in the country, and one of the top tourist attractions in St. Augustine, Florida.

The Executive Director will oversee all aspects of the Museum. The Museum is comprised of three legally separate entities – the Museum, LAMP, and Salt Run Sales – that congruently make up the overarching St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum. The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. It is the parent organization of the other two entities, holds most of the assets, and is overseen by a Board of Trustees. The Lighthouse Archaeology Maritime Program, Inc. (LAMP) is a 501(c)3 whose major donor is the Museum. This program is an active, ethical, and scientific research program. LAMP is overseen by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees. Salt Run Sales, Inc. is a for-profit wholesale and tour company that handles the Museum’s ancillary activities and pays taxes. Salt Run Sales is overseen by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Trustees and leads an energized staff of 40-50 individuals. This role is responsible for the general and fiscal leadership and management of the entire organization, the archaeology program, interpretive programs, educational activities, exhibitions, collections management, conservation, museum store and wholesale and tour programs, volunteers, revenue generation, budgets, and external relations. This person plays a leading role in developing and articulating the strategic direction of the Museum and in implementing the strategies and initiatives.

Summary of Responsibilities
•Manage overall operations and the day-to-day functions of the Museum, LAMP, and Salt Run Sales.
•Support, educate about, and uphold LAMP’s pertinent contribution to the Museum as a world-renowned active archaeological, historical, and scientific research program.
•Champion the continuation and growth of Salt Run Sales and understand its significance as a revenue generator for the organization.
•Increase local, statewide, national, and international awareness and prominence.
•Cultivate a strong working relationship with staff based on trust, confidence, and transparency while encouraging collaboration in pursuit of organizational effectiveness and growth.
•Strengthen and support the Museum’s programmatic and operational goals; maintain strong financial oversight including setting long and short-term financial objectives to facilitate sustainable growth.
•Oversee all Director level staff members and their respective duties as they relate to the overall function of the Museum and its mission.
•Advocates for important issues in historic preservation and maritime history on the local, regional, national, and international levels.
•Together with the Director of Development, create and pursue a strong fundraising plan that ensures the growth of a diversified funding stream, including individual gifts, corporate, foundation, and government grants.
•Stay current on trends that affect museums, cultural institutions, and attractions that blend community outreach with traditional museum-based activities.
•Be involved in marketing, advertising, and public relations activities effectively communicating the work and mission of the Museum while increasing the Museum’s visibility.
•Encourage an entrepreneurial culture that identifies, assesses, and pursues opportunities to generate new earned income revenue sources while improving existing revenue categories.
•Focus on refreshing and developing exhibits to provide accurate, authentic, and creative perspectives regarding mission-related topics.
•Serves as spokesperson and chief advocate for the Museum. Establishes strong partnerships in the community. Enhances the Museum’s public image to expand interest and support.

Desired Qualifications & Skills

•Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
•Minimum of 8 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and management.
•Ability to provide strong leadership, vision, and strategic direction.
•Demonstrated knowledge of standards and best practices for museums, nonprofits, or similar organizations, as well as a history of involvement in relevant professional organizations.
•Strong record of success in fundraising and audience development.
•Demonstrated excellence in writing and public speaking.
•Competence in managing operations. Demonstrated ability to supervise, as well as to work successfully with, museum staff, volunteers, and diverse public constituencies.
•Evidence of success in developing, managing, and growing an annual operating budget. Strong business management skills.
•Excellent planning, time management, and decision-making skills.
•Entrepreneurial and creative self-starter who is also a strategic and credible colleague and thought leader.
•Strong organizational skills and poise under pressure; flexible, able to focus, prioritize and implement, as well as address and solve problems/issues as they arise

•Willingness to work a variable schedule, including weekends and evenings, when needed. Ability to travel, as needed, and especially to industry-related conferences.

•Physical demands: In the work environment described below, the position requires working at a desk and using a computer for prolonged periods of time. The position also requires written and verbal conversation with others, as well as standing, walking, bending, climbing, reaching, and lifting/moving objects up to 25 pounds. Work may occur in both hot and cold temperatures.
•Work Environment: The majority of work will be performed in a multi-level work area
and over 6 acres of property. Some museum buildings are not accessible to the mobility impaired.
