SUMMARY:

The Knight Vice President of Education is a member of the Museum’s Senior Staff and is responsible for the development and management of all educational initiatives within the Museum and those that serve the community at large. This position requires vision and oversight for the development of innovative and inquiry-based approaches to STEM educational programs and exhibits to increase people’s understanding of and interest in science.

The Knight VP of Education maintains the museum’s role as a leader in informal science education and must inspire, lead, and shape a world-class team of science educators, thus ensuring the museum’s continued excellence in science and technology learning for all. This position will work collaboratively across every department in the museum, and more in depth with Advancement, Marketing, Exhibits, Guest Experience and Finance on a variety of projects including federal and foundation grants as well as programs and content development that align with new and current exhibitions. The Knight VP of Education promotes leadership in new learning technologies and new ways to broaden and engage the general public and youth. They will also lead the vision for continuing well established and developing new revenue-based educational programs and oversee the Reservations department, including field trips and outreach.

The Knight VP of Education develops and cultivates new partnerships in the community and with businesses internationally. They will work alongside their team and the SVP of External Affairs to develop and implement a new strategic initiative for increasing the museum’s presence throughout the South Florida community. They will also provide a vision for developing and maintaining new and established partnerships for educational services developed and provided by the museum’s education team.

The Knight VP of Education is expected to stay abreast of new developments in STEM education, communications and policy and identifies and cultivates funding opportunities that align with the Museum’s vision and goals. They will contribute to the informal learning knowledge base through exploratory and experimental research and promotes science education at the museum and beyond through participation in local and national events and meetings, and by developing partnerships with industry, educational institutions, other museums, and science and learning researchers.

ESSENTIAL Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to the established policies and procedures of the Museum.
  • Lead the strategic vision and goals for the education department aligned with the museum’s mission through both revenue-based and access-based programs.
  • Manage, maintain, and grow a strong team of 15+ educators.
  • Work closely with exhibitions and marketing to develop and promote excellent science and technology learning outcomes for school groups and the general public throughout the exhibition and program spaces within the museum.
  • Establish and maintain outstanding pre-service and in-service professional development programs for science and technology teachers from PreK-12.
  • Serve as the primary communication link between the museum and the public PreK-20 formal education community.
  • Work closely with the museum’s Advancement department to initiate funding opportunities for new and innovative educational programs in line with the museum’s overall strategic goals.
  • Create and disseminate content that meets state and national education standards for schools and public program activities.
  • Develop new and continuing developing established partnerships with businesses for service for hire opportunities.
  • Develops new and innovative technology and tools for learning in an informal science environment, using research and data driven approaches and encompassing both digital and analog modes, from social media to physical tools.
  • Create and manage a departmental budget and program-based grant budgets.
  • Lead the strategic development and implementation of federal grants, including opportunities from NSF, US Dept. of Education, and IMLS, serving at the PI or Co-PI.
  • Maintains current and develops new relationships with informal science institutions in the US and abroad to scale effective programs.
  • Serves as an advocate for science education at the local, state and national levels.
  • Contributes to the knowledge and research base with regards to informal science education through collaboration with research groups and institutions of higher education.
  • Increases the dissemination of educational initiatives and programs, including the use of the museum website.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Doctorate degree in natural or physical sciences, science education, or related field required.
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience leading science-based teams in the development of educational programs or science content.
  • Experience with a major cultural institution preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and practices to supervise staff and manage human resources effectively.
  2. Ability to present oneself as an ambassador for Frost Science in the press and community, and with donors, partners, elected officials, and other museum stakeholders.
  3. Experience working with children, youth and families of diverse backgrounds and income levels.
  4. Experience building educational partnerships.
  5. Knowledge of new media and latest learning technologies.
  6. Knowledge of federal and private grant policies and procedures and a proven track record of securing federal and private science research funding.
  7. Ability to implement financial plans and budgets and identify, secure, and manage resources from traditional and non-traditional sources of funding.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively to develop, plan and implement short- and long-range goals.
  9. Ability to create, compose and edit written materials.
  10. Experience in the development of collaborative proposals.
  11. Knowledge and ability to manage and ensure compliance with all funding sources and Museum policies and work rules.
  12. Skill in database management, MS Office, Internet, and desktop publishing.
  13. Knowledge of service-for-hire education program models.
  14. Knowledge of a second language is an advantage.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those as employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work time will be split between working in an open office setting and on-the-floor providing program oversight. Occasional exposure to outdoor activities may be requested. Weekend and evening work in alignment with programs required.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Level 2 background clearance as defined by Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
  • Drug screening as part of the Drug Free Workplace Program.
