Job Summary:
The Public History Coordinator will cultivate develop and deliver historical interpretation for exhibits, daily visitor programs, groups and content for media (blog, website, magazine) projects. This role collaborates with project teams, curatorial staff, and other museum staff to ensure content and interpretive techniques used in the museum achieve the mission, established standards, and enhances the visitor’s experience of learning and enjoyment.
Collaborating closely with the Manager of Interpretation and other departments, this position plays a vital role in aligning volunteer efforts with the strategic goals of the Organization and the Interpretive Department, ensuring impactful community support and enriching experiences for all.
Major Responsibilities:
Responsibilities may include, but will not be limited to, the following:
• Serve as key staff member of institutional facts and stories to improve consistent content and interpretation across the organization
• Research and synthesize information using historical resources to develop and present programming on a wide range of topics for diverse audiences.
• Assist with the development, implementation and evaluation of all history-based programs.
• Develop, review, and lead Interpretive Training to museum staff and volunteers.
• Participate in exhibition and institutional interpretive planning.
• Support Museum’s digital content through the organization’s social media platforms, magazine, newsletters and all marketing material.
• Assist Interpretation team with programs and tours as scheduled to support department needs.
• Coordinates with Operations & Marketing for the onsite program needs and promotional needs.
• Communicates program information, training, and detail to staff, volunteers, and the public.
• Required to perform site support activities, including tower and base shifts (2.5 hours), site events, specialty tours and answering phones.
• Scheduled occasional nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the Mission.

• Demonstrates professionalism and excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills in working with staff, volunteers and the public.
• Ability to support and instruct museum staff, volunteers, and interns in an engaging and positive approach.
• Strong service orientation with an interest in working with the public and museum staff and volunteers in one-on-one and in group settings.
• Must have excellent editorial skills.
• Working knowledge of American History.
• Teamwork: Identify points for collaboration with co-workers; readily offer and request assistance.
• Shows a passion for the mission.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a major in history or related field required and 2-4 years of experience leading staff and public interpretation. Must demonstrate proficiency with MS Office products, including Word and Excel.
Preferred
Master’s Degree, Public History, American History, Museum Studies or related field.
Understanding of National Association for Interpretation best practices and historical interpretation best practices.
Essential Functions/Physical Requirements:
The duties above indicate the essential functions of the job. Physical requirements are those present in a normal office. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable business needs, and a moderate amount of business travel is required. Must be able to climb the lighthouse tower, stand for periods up to 2.5 – 3 hours, and perform required duties outdoors in varied weather conditions. Moderate lifting of inventory of 25 pounds will be required. CPR training to be furnished at the organization’s expense. Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as regular daily work hours to meet the organization’s needs.
