Registrar and Collections Manager

The Ashley Gibson Barnett Museum of Art (The AGB) at Florida Southern College (formerly the Polk Museum of Art) in Lakeland, Florida, invites applications for an experienced Registrar and Collections Manager to join its expert curatorial team.

Reporting to the Executive Director and Chief Curator, the Registrar and Collections Manager is a key member of Museum staff and is responsible for the oversight, care, and maintenance of the 3,400+ works in the Museum’s permanent collection as well as for objects on loan to the Museum. Adhering to museum best practices and policies, the Registrar and Collections Manager manages all record-keeping, condition-reporting, preservation, handling, and packing/unpacking of objects. The Registrar and Collections Manager serves as the vital caretaker of the collection and all objects held in and on display at the Museum.

As The AGB enters into its exciting next chapter with a 14,000-square-foot expansion set to open in Fall 2024, its new Registrar and Collections Manager will work alongside the rest of the curatorial team, assisting in the curation of more than 20 loan and permanent collection shows each year.

Primary job responsibilities:

· Maintain, care for, and manage the Museum’s permanent collection
· Oversee Museum environmental control and physical conditions for displaying and storing art safely and securely according to best practices
· Ensure proper handling and storage of artworks on premises
· Handle condition reports and packing for all incoming and outgoing loans and permanent collection objects
· Assign accession numbers, compile accession records, and enter data concerning Museum artifacts
· Maintain Museum collection records, archival documentation of condition reports, loans, accessions, de-accessions, restoration/preservation history, object exhibition history, via paper and The Museum System (TMS) collections management database
· Coordinate and ensure the safe handling and installation of works of art and artifacts for each exhibition, alongside curatorial team
· Prepare objects for display in galleries
· Assist curatorial team in exhibition conceptualization, layout, presentation, and installation/deinstallation of artworks

The successful candidate will have at least three to five years experience in the museum/gallery fields, a strong sense for object care, preservation, and history, a skilled background in registration/collections/archives, and the ability to work well both independently and as a team player.
